Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence is used to help your business acquire a better understanding of its commercial context by referring to skills, technologies, applications and practices. It turns a simple data into a meaningful knowledge, which turns into profits. It answers some of your questions like which products cost the most to maintain, where can you cut the cost, which of your customers are more profitable etc. BI applications include the activities of decision support systems, query and reporting, online analytical processing (OLAP), statistical analysis, forecasting, and data mining.

Database Design
There are very orderly and sound rules to follow and developed these rules into what is called the Normalization Process. Using this process, we can create brand new, fully functional, finely tuned databases or take current database tables, run them through these steps, and come out with well-oiled tables ready to fly. However we use these steps, they are the fundamentals of quality database design.

A number of techniques have developed that allow a database design to evolve as an application develops. This is a very important capability for agile methodologies. The techniques rely on applying continuous integration and automated refactoring to database development, together with a close collaboration between DBAs and application developers.

A good database design is, therefore, one that divides your information into subject-based tables to reduce redundant data, provides access with the information it requires to join the information in the tables together as needed, helps support and ensures the accuracy and integrity of your information and accommodates your data processing and reporting needs.

Database Development
The database development process comprises a series of phases. The major phases in information engineering are:

  • Planning: The database-planning phase begins when a customer requests to develop a database project. It is set of tasks or activities, which decide the resources required in the database development and time limits of different activities.

  • Analysis: In requirements analysis phase, the requirements and expectations of the users are collected and analyzed. The collected requirements help to understand the system that does not yet exist.

  • Design: In this phase, the information models that were developed during analysis are used to design a conceptual schema for the database and to design transaction and application.

  • DBMS Selection: In this phase an appropriate DBMS is selected to support the information system. A number of factors are involved in DBMS selection. They may be technical and economical factors .

  • Implementation: The purpose of this phase is to construct and install the information system according to the plan and design as described in previous phases. Implementation involves a series of steps leading to operational information system that includes creating database definitions, developing applications, testing the system, developing operational procedures and documentation, training the users and populating the database.

  • Maintenance: the operational maintenance is the process of monitoring and maintaining the database system. Maintenance includes activities such as adding new fields, changing the size of existing field, adding new tables, and so on.

Reports
A well designed report can provide powerful benefits to your business by making sense of your valuable customer data. It shows you data in a filtered and organized manner.
